Speech Sounds
Most children will make mistakes with their speech sound production at some point in their development. Different sounds are expected to develop at different ages. A speech sound delay exists when a child continues to make mistakes with a particular sound or group of sounds past the age expected.
What are the symptoms of a speech sound delay?
Not sounding clear
Speech sounds slushy
Substituting one sound for another
Leaving off sounds at the beginning, middle and end of words
❋
Language
A language delay occurs when a child’s language is developing slower than other children of the same age, but it is following the typical pattern of development. For example, a child may be 4 years of age, but understanding and/or using language typical of a child who may be only 2.5 years of age.
Children with language delays, typically present with the following:
Are late talkers
Have limited vocabulary development
Find it difficult to express themselves
Do not understand well or experience difficulty following directions.
✦
Literacy & School Readiness
Reading is more than sounds and sight words. Children need a lot of skills in order to read and spell successfully. Reading is the ability to understand meaning from print.
Spelling is the ability to write letters to form words to express a meaning. The simple task of reading and spelling is really anything but simple!
Speech Therapy teaches fundamental skills for reading and spelling through targeted, explicit and evidence-based instruction (phonological awareness and decoding).
✿
Fluency (Stuttering)
Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech (fluency) is interrupted by repeated movements and fixed postures of the speech mechanism.
There are many different types of stutters such as repetitions (li-li-like this), prolongations (lllllike this), or abnormal stoppages (no sound) of sounds and syllables. Children may experience one type of stutter or a variety of different types of stutters. Stuttering can be very different from one child to another. A stutter for a child can be quite variable from one to another, as well as being variable within a person. Stuttering characteristics may change over time or remain the same.
